Peri-implantitis
Gum disease around implants: the main long-term threat, and how to prevent it.
What it is
An infection of the gum and bone around an implant. It starts as peri-implant mucositis (red, bleeding gums, reversible) and can progress to bone loss.
Who is at risk
- People with a history of gum disease
- Smokers
- People who find cleaning difficult
- Poorly fitting crowns or leftover cement
Treatment
Deep cleaning, antiseptics, sometimes antibiotics, and in advanced cases surgery to clean and reshape the bone.
Prevention
Good daily cleaning and regular professional check-ups are the best protection.
