Bone grafting
Rebuilding lost jawbone so that there is enough to hold an implant.
Why you might need it
After a tooth is lost, the jawbone slowly shrinks. If too little is left, the dentist can add bone material, usually granules from a bovine, synthetic or your own source, covered by a membrane.
How long it takes
Small grafts are often done at the same time as the implant. Larger grafts need 4–9 months of healing before the implant can be placed.
Alternatives
Short implants, tilted implants (All-on-4) or zygomatic implants can sometimes avoid a graft. Ask your dentist which is best for you.
Every mouth is different. A dentist can only recommend a treatment after examining you and taking X-rays.
