The implant procedure, step by step

What happens from the first appointment to the final tooth.

  1. Consultation

    The dentist examines your mouth, discusses options and costs, and takes X-rays. Bring a list of your medicines.

  2. 3D scan and planning

    A CBCT scan shows the bone height, width and position of nerves and sinuses. Many clinics plan the implant digitally and make a surgical guide.

  3. Preparation (if needed)

    Extractions, gum treatment, bone grafts or sinus lifts are done first, or sometimes at the same visit.

  4. Implant placement

    Under local anaesthetic, a small opening is made in the gum and bone, and the implant is screwed in. It usually takes 30–60 minutes per implant.

  5. Healing

    Bone grows onto the implant surface over 6–12 weeks (longer in the upper jaw or after grafts). This is called osseointegration.

  6. Abutment and impressions

    A connector (abutment) is attached and a scan or impression is taken for the crown.

  7. Final teeth

    The crown, bridge or denture is fitted and your bite is checked.

  8. Lifelong maintenance

    Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups keep the implant healthy. See caring for implants.
