Recovery after implant surgery

What to expect in the first days and weeks, and when to call your dentist.

First 24 hours

  • Bite gently on gauze to stop bleeding.
  • Use an ice pack on your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 off.
  • Do not rinse, spit forcefully or use a straw.
  • Eat soft, cool foods. Avoid hot drinks.

Days 2 to 7

  • Swelling usually peaks on day 2–3, then settles.
  • Start gentle salt-water rinses.
  • Brush your other teeth normally, and around the area gently.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

Weeks 2 to 12

Stitches are removed or dissolve. Keep to softer foods on the implant side until your dentist says otherwise.

Call your dentist if you have heavy bleeding that will not stop, swelling that gets worse after day 3, fever, pus, or the implant feels loose.
